Kawasaki Launches Ninja ZX-10R And ZX-14R In Indian Market

Kawasaki-NinjaZX10R
These two motorbikes will come to India through a CBU (Completely Built Unit) route and will be sold through a new chain of independent dealerships that Kawasaki will establish across the country. The first such motorcycle dealership is already ready at Wakdewadi, Pune. At present Bajaj is not equipped to handle things involved in selling and servicing of these bikes.
Bookings of the motorcycles will open from tomorrow while deliveries could start from the end of September.
Ninja ZX-10R features the all-new 998cc four cylinder 1-litre petrol engine. With a 6 speed manual gearbox, this petrol engine uses fuel injection and 4 valves per cylinder to deliver 210 PS of peak power at 13,000 rpm and 114 Nm of peak torque at 10,000 rpm. Company claims a fuel economy of 17kmpl on Ninja ZX-10R. Other features on the bike include all new suspension and an all new frame. The bike also gets ABS and traction control to handle the immense performance.
Ninja ZX-14R is powered with a massive 1,441 cc four-cylinder petrol engine and delivers similar power of 210 PS, but at a lower 10,000 rpm. Torque though is a mighty 162.5 Nm, at 7,500 rpm. As the rpm levels for the peak power and torque suggest, the Ninja ZX-14R is a motorcycle that’s tuned for sports touring rather than blazing across tracks.
Kawasaki’s exclusive showroom in Wakdewadi, Pune will open on September 7. Deliveries will begin by late September.

BMW to launch 1-Series Hatchback today

BMW is all set to launch the 1-series luxury hatchback today. The BMW 1-Series is a direct rival to the Mercedes Benz A-Class, Volvo V40 Cross Country and the Audi Q3 S. BMW 1 Series feature a rear wheel drive and punchy engine options and the the car has good quality interiors. The exteriors of 1 Series follow the family style of a long sleek hood narrowing down to a sharp snout, a set back passenger cabin and a sharply chiseled rear. BMW would most probably bring in the 1.6 litre Turbo Petrol good for 138PS and the 2.0 litre 144PS Turbo diesel engine, both of which will be mated to the 8-speed ZF automatic transmission.
The hatchback will be assembled at BMW India’s Chennai facility which currently assembles the 3 Series and 5 Series sedans, the X1 compact SUV and the diesel X3. BMW should be able to price the new 1 Series very aggressively, around Rs 20-22 lakhs (estimated) for the starting petrol variant.

Soon, Buy A Flying Car At US $279,000

When we think about flying cars, it seems unreal, though we know that there have been news of its prototypes being tested over the years. One of the similar car ‘Terrafugia Transition’ is being tested and may soon be available for purchase at around US $279,000. The company’s website even has a reserve option for you to reserve a car for future purchase.
Terrafugia is perhaps just a few regulations and one very powerful battery away from clearing most of the hurdles.
With a cruising speed of 100 miles per hour in the air and gas mileage of about 35 to the gallon on the ground, Terrafugia’s first model of flying car exists already.
The Transition is basically a small general-aviation airplane that can fold up its wings with the push of a button. It runs on normal automative gasoline — about 30% less expensive than aviation fuel (its range is about 410 miles plus a 30-minute reserve). Fly the Transition to a small airport, land, and the wings withdraw in less than a minute. Its propeller disengages and its rear-wheel drive turns on. At that point, you’re street legal and ready to roll. At home, the Transition is designed to fit within a single-car garage.

It’s a dream that Carl Dietrich, the company’s co-founder, CEO and CTO, has been working at steadily since 2006.
It was in 2004, while he was completing his Ph.D. at M.I.T., that Dietrich read about new developments at the Federal Aviation Administration — new kinds of pilots’ licenses and a new kind of aircraft certification. These paved the way for Terrafugia. Enter the Transition.
“There is so much potential for an economic benefit to society if we have things like this. There have been a number of studies recently that have quantified the economic impact of traffic congestion … just for the U.S., I think it was estimated at $87 billion to $125 billion a year. And that’s just comparing it to driving at normal speeds, without traffic” Dietrich said, speaking of the flying cars he’s helping to design.

Facelifted Toyota Innova 2013 Coming This September

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Private Limited is all set to launch the facelifted Toyota Innova 2013 in India. Last week, the facelifted Toyota Innova was launched in Indonesia and this very model could come to India next month. This faclifted Toyota Innova will be its third iteration since the launch in 2005. Also the all-new Innova is also on the cards, but won’t launch before 2016.

The facelifted Toyota Innova will see styling changes on the exterior and some added features in the cabin as well.

Up front, the facelifted Toyota Innova will get a new distinct chrome heavy grille, redesigned bumper for the air dam, new fog lamps and chrome surrounds for the fog lamp enclosures.

The rear also gets ample chrome addition around the number plate along with an extended tail lamp cluster with a broad chrome bar flanked by it, while an extra set of reflectors is incorporated on either side too.

On the inside, the car gets beige interiors with improved fabrics along with an all-new infotainment system which includes a rear display unit mounted on the roof. Steering mounted controls and captain seats in the middle also come as standard in the top spec variant. On the safety front, the car get dual airbags in the front and side impact beams embedded to the chassis.

Seven variants of the facelifted Toyota Innova with the G being the base model (7 and 8 seater), GX (7 and 8 seater), VX (7 and 8 seater), and an all-new top-spec Z variant, which will get additions like leather seats and wooden inlays in the interior trim.

Under the hood things remain unchanged, which means the facelifted Toyota Innova will be powered by a 2.5-litre D4D diesel engine that puts out 102bhp and a 2.0-litre VVT petrol engine that puts out 130bhp.

There is no news on the pricing front. But we expect the price of the new facelifted Toyota Innova to be marginally high. Existing model of the Toyota Innova is Rs 9.51 – 14.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The future of driving

1. Self-driving cars

From BMW to Bentley, everyone wants to make a fully autonomous car. Serial disruptor Google’s having a go too, with a self-driver that’s clocked up 400,000 miles without an accident, while Oxford University researchers are working to make the tech available in a unit that costs £100. A connected car needs to know where it is, but it also needs to be aware of the location of other vehicles and infrastructure. That means the way we build cities may have to change to accommodate them.

2. Fuel of the future
Range anxiety may be a first-world problem par excellence but the fact is, it’s putting the brakes on early adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Peppy new entrants such as Renault’s excellent, surprisingly affordable Zoe EV could start to buck that trend, but thanks to efficiency leaps and hybrid tech, petrol and diesel engines will remain the biggest sellers for the foreseeable – the cars posing with our model throughout this feature are all hybrids.

3. Safety tech

Ford and others are working on car-to-car comms, with web-linked vehicles warning each other of crater-sized potholes or traffic snarl-ups they’ve just hit. It’s another step towards fully autonomous cars. Meanwhile, Intel is researching a sophisticated headlighting system that can “see through” rain, making night-drives through downpours safer.

4. In-car apps

Ford recently held an AppLink hackathon with Google that threw up ideas including playlists and navigation driven by your friends’ favourites on Facebook. Vauxhall’s parent company GM is plotting apps driven by an “intention engine”. It’ll know the car needs refuelling before you do, giving you a poke when you happen to be passing the cheapest petrol station in town.

5. Futuristic designs

Paint-jobs could become a thing of the past as your car becomes more like a smartphone home page on wheels. The body of Toyota’s Fun-Vii concept is one big touchscreen, letting you display any colour, image or message you fancy. Again, fully-automated cars will bring about a sea-change, with “heritage” conventions such as forward-facing seats and even four wheels going out the window. Developments in 3D printing could also lead to radical new shapes and more personalised detailing.

6. The changing cockpit

The quest for lower emissions will soon throw up clever cabin features for saving energy. BMW is working on infra-red heating panels for its “i” range of electric cars, while Peugeot wants to introduce fully recyclable interiors. Ford design director, J Mays, reckons voice and gesture controls could eventually mean no more physical buttons and switches, radically changing car interiors. Researchers at Ford also reckon adaptable nano materials will make for cabins that can reconfigure on the fly, allowing you to maximise cabin space.

7. Full connectivity

The future of car connectivity is all about what you do with it. That starts with things like the car communicating its location and seamless navigation that combines in-car with on-foot. As Ford’s Evos concept recently showed, pretty soon we’ll also be talking context-aware and cloud-connected cars that sync with your diary and social networks and know where you’re going and who you’re meeting even before you jump on board.

8. Lower emissions

The EU targets demand a 35 per cent drop in average new car emissions between 2015 and 2020. If that’s to be achieved, conventional combustion engines and hybrids will need to improve, helped by predictive power management that optimises for road conditions – EVs are likely to remain a niche market. Further ahead, self-driving cars in aero-efficient “train” formations could also help cut CO2.

9. Ultimate entertainment
Get ready for… Laser movie projectors as head lights! The recent Mercedes GLA concept is equipped with just that, letting you paint navigation cues on the road ahead as well as showing content from Mercedes’ COMAND entertainment platform. Just find a nice clean wall at your local multi-storey for instant, drive-in fun. Easy, in-car streaming of cloud-based music, movies and TVs will be with us just as soon as the 4G mobile infrastructure is all in place.

Hovercraft concepts we wish were real

1. Volkswagen Aqua

Aqua is the brainchild of Yuhan Zhang – a 21 year old Industrial Design graduate from China. Though it was designed to handle the variable terrain of China, it wouldn’t look out of place around the world thanks to the submarine-style looks and a host of great ideas, such as an emission-less hydrogen fuel cell.
Link: Video

2. Aerofex Tandem Duct Aerial Vehicle

Californian aerospace company Aerofex are bringing hope to millions of Star Wars fans around the world, that we may one day see a genuine speeder bike. It is also adamant that you won’t be cruising down to the shops in one of these – the technology will be made available to the public sector, but sadly not the public.

Link: Aerofex | Video

3. Audi Shark
This award-winning concept looks like a giant coffin fish – not the most stylish Audi we’ve ever seen - but it’s actually a two seater hover-car, of sorts. It is not a working concept, but the design won creator Kazim Doku first prize from the Italian Domus Academy.

Link: Kazim Doku | Video

4. BW1 hovercraft

Driving a hovercraft around your local pitch and putt seems a tad pretentious, but Bubba Watson and Oakley have teamed up to make it a reality. When you think about it, the idea makes plenty of sense. The footprint pressure of a hovercraft is 33% less than that of a human foot, so you can you casually glide your way across bunkers, water hazards and even greens without disturbing a thing.

Link: Oakley | Video

5. Mercier-Jones hovercraft
Cousins Michael Mercier and Chris Jones are on a mission to make hovercrafts relevant in the 21st century. With design cues from some of the finest sports cars on the roads today, this two-seater uses two side-pods for steering and a single petrol engine to provide electricity for the motors within the craft. Add in high-end materials and the Mercier-Jones Hovercraft is serious business.

Nissan ZEOD RC: World's fastest electric racing car to take on Le Mans

Nissan has unveiled the ZEOD RC, an electric racing car capable of speeds over 300kph. The company will be entering the car in the 2014 24 hour Le Mans endurance race to not only testbed new technology but also to disprove many preconceptions about electric vehicles.

Speaking to T3, Nissan's Global Motorsport Director Darren Cox explained why the company had unveiled the car to fans before the press pointing out that 'motorsport today is too closed off, too elitest, we really wanted to get the fans involved'.

The main purpose of the car however is to act as a testbed for trying out new technology, something that Cox feels the motorsport industry is no longer doing.

"There's not enough innovation coming from motorsport and then heading to conventional cars, with the ZEOD RC however we plan to change that."

Nissan have been focusing heavily on electric vehicles with the Nissan Leaf now recognised as the world's best-selling electric car. The ZEOD RC will be the foundation for technology that could then go into the next generation of Nissan Leaf vehicles.

A Car That Matches Your Eyes

Credit Suisse is an Official Sponsor of the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, an event beginning this week in California that celebrates the rarest and most beautiful cars in the world. As the events get underway, The Financialist covers a prominent trend in luxury vehicles: customized cars.
For someone who can afford a car painted to match a favorite lipstick, or a flower, or a necktie – and yes, those are requests that well-heeled car buyers have actually made – Monterey, Calif., is the place to be this week.
For five days in August, California’s Monterey Peninsula serves as a headquarters for owners and admirers of the world’s rarest and most exclusive collector cars. It all culminates in the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance this Sunday, when the top vintage collectors are judged on their cars’ historical accuracy, technical merit and style. “Pebble Beach is quite simply the finest concours of its kind. It attracts the best cars,” said automotive journalist Ken Gross, a judge at the competition for the last 25 years. “If your car wins at Pebble Beach, you can rest assured it’s the best it can be.”
The vintage-classics crowd expects a lot from their new cars, too, and brands see the expo as an opportunity to showcase their bespoke offerings. To this crowd, cars from ultra-exclusive brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as well as top-of-the-line models from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, aren’t yet a finished product when they roll off the assembly line. That’s just the starting point – a blank canvas that can then be customized to buyers’ individual tastes. While the days of the fully bespoke automobile are for the most part over, thanks to strict safety regulations that make creating a soup-to-nuts, custom-made vehicle prohibitively expensive, leading high-end brands are increasingly interested in personalizing cars to fit their wealthiest customers’ whims.

Photo of a custom SLS AMG in “Boudalis Blue” with “Peeler Orange” stitching on the seats courtesy of Mercedes-Benz. The car was on display at the 2011 New York Auto Show. “While it was not customized for a specific customer, an auto show attendee loved the car so much that it was soon purchased after the show,” a company spokesperson noted.

At the extreme high end, a design, engineering and small-batch manufacturing firm such as Italy’s Pininfarina does create one-of-a-kind cars for individual clients. People are still talking about the Ferrari P4/5, a unique car that Pininfarina built by restyling a rare Ferrari Enzo model with a retro exterior that recalls that brand’s race cars from the 1960s. Pininfarina delivered it to an American collector, James Glickenhaus, in 2006—at Pebble Beach.
Pininfarina says it plans to build a “very limited series” of its latest concept car, the Sergio – named for the late chairman of the firm, Sergio Pininfarina – for retail sale. At this year’s concours, Pininfarina and Germany’s BMW plan to show another concept car called the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe, a V-12 model styled by Pininfarina and based on the flagship BMW 7-Series. The companies do not plan to offer the concept car for retail sale, though Pininfarina spokesman Francesco Fiordelisi said the company does take orders from “special customers” for one-off models.

But even Pininfarina’s special customers aren’t getting cars made from scratch. Back in the day – say, before World War II – a tycoon, movie star or a head of state could special-order a separate chassis from a luxury automaker and have a coachbuilder create a one-of-a-kind body to bolt on top of the chassis to create a one-of-a-kind, street-legal car. Today, cars are built on a “unibody” structure that’s a single, welded-together piece, instead of a body bolted on top of a ladder-like chassis. Add to that modern safety and emissions requirements, and the idea of building a completely unique car is essentially a thing of the past.

Modern cars are designed to absorb and deflect the energy of a crash, channeling it away from the occupants. When a manufacturer makes modifications that could affect a car’s safety performance in a crash, it has to perform extremely expensive crash testing on the new version. That involves destroying a prototype car –more likely multiple cars – under lab conditions. For most people – even extremely wealthy people – it’s simply not economical to underwrite such testing for a single car.The same idea applies to emissions. It’s enormously expensive to perform emissions testing on an engine that’s not already certified for sale in the United States. Therefore, even the crème de la crème choose certified engines off the shelf instead of creating a new engine from scratch. For its part, Pininfarina typically starts out with a production model from another manufacturer. The Sergio, for example, has the mechanical insides of a Ferrari 458 Spider.
THREE ORANGE CARS? NO PROBLEM
The bragging rights that come with a “bespoke” automobile do not come cheap. Almost any degree of personalization commands big bucks, which is why the luxury automotive brands assemble en masse in and around Monterey to court old and new customers. And they’re open to pretty much any idea. “It’s really endless,” said BMW’s Experiential Sales and Marketing Manager Nicolas Brown, when asked what customers can do to personalize a car. Brown is in charge of cars that are personalized under the “BMW Individual” program.
Brown said customers spend anywhere from $2,000 to well over $40,000 customizing their BMWs with special interior and exterior colors, wood veneer and other paneling choices – one wealthy salmon farmer opted for salmon-skin veneers – plus leather and other exotic materials. Colors usually come from the BMW palette, but BMW will also create custom colors—for a price. Getting a custom color is not simply a matter of choosing “the blue one” instead of “the red one” at your local dealership. High-end customers can ask a luxury manufacturer to match literally anything, or may simply want their fleet of cars to match one another, even if a standard paint color has been discontinued. In its 100-plus years of manufacturing, Rolls-Royce says it has created more than 44,000 exterior paint colors. Adding to the cachet of custom-ordering, one-of-a-kind colors are reserved for the exclusive future use of the client who ordered them.

A Rolls-Royce craftsperson painstakingly creates a wood-veneer insignia for the dashboard of one of the brand’s “Home of Rolls-Royce” collection vehicles. Photo courtesy of Rolls-Royce.

During this year’s Pebble Beach festivities, one BMW collector is taking delivery of three personalized BMWs from the company’s high-performance “M” division – an M6 Coupe, a matching M6 Convertible and an M5 Sedan. All three have “Sakhir Orange” exterior paint, an optional, red-orange color reserved for certain high-end models and named for a landmark at the Bahrain International Circuit, a Formula One racetrack.

SPECIAL TREATMENTIn a recent interview at BMW’s U.S. headquarters in the United States, Brown said that the BMW Individual treatment is available for BMW 5-, 6-, 7-Series and X6 crossover models, plus the BMW M5 and M6, although most individualized cars in the U.S. market are 6-Series, 7-Series or M models. And consider this: the 2014 M6 Convertible is $116,425 suggested retail, including $925 in destination and handling fees, before any modifications or extras.
BMW intends to announce a new feature for its BMW Individual program during this year’s Pebble Beach events: one-on-one access to a designer from BMW’s DesignWorksUSA subsidiary in Newbury Park, Calif., who can work with clients to select colors and materials.

Rival Mercedes-Benz calls its customization program “designo.” When the program was launched in the late 1990s, it was little more than an assortment of a few upgraded options packages. The company re-launched it for the 2008 model year, featuring a much wider range of choices for paint, trim and leather, said Paul La Penta, assistant product manager for the design program and the high-performance division AMG for Mercedes-Benz USA. “It’s probably the closest you can get to truly custom modifications,” La Penta told The Financialist. A 2014 SLS AMG GT sports car painted with an exclusive “Monterey Blue” color will be shown at Pebble Beach.

That’s not the only thing Mercedes-Benz has in store. The company plans to show its new 2014 S63 AMG at a series of exclusive events taking place at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club, Carmel, Calif., as part of the Pebble Beach expo. The car is the high-performance version of the all-new, S-class flagship sedan and a strong candidate for customized design orders. The decision to roll out the model at Pebble Beach shows how important the concours’ high net worth audience is for car companies, since it isn’t actually expected to make its auto show debut until September’s Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany.

BESPOKEN FOR

Rolls-Royce, owned by BMW since 1998, has enjoyed substantial growth in its “bespoke” division. Custom-ordered cars accounted for 95 percent of North American deliveries of the company’s Phantom models in the first quarter of 2013, up from 60 percent in 2009 and only 30 percent in 2005.

The compass motif embroidered into the leather of the Home of Rolls-Royce Collection vehicles require more than 112,000 stitches. Photo courtesy of Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce plans to show its “Home of Rolls-Royce” commemorative models of the car company’s Phantom sedan at Pebble Beach. With a suggested retail price of $463,065, the model marks the 10th anniversary of the brand’s most up-to-date factory. Only 50 “Home of Rolls-Royce” cars will be built for sale worldwide, according to spokesman Oleg Satanovsky. Of those, only a “handful” will come to the U.S. market, he said.
There is no better place to get a jump on selling a “handful” of $460,000-plus cars than Pebble Beach this August. Carmakers know that the enthusiasts there are increasingly focused on the rare, the exclusive and the built-for-me aspects of the ultra-luxury car market, and they’re plenty willing to pay for them.

Welcome To The Future : An RC Car That Runs On Water.

People have been talking about running cars on water for years, but it’s a slow march from science fiction to reality. Even on a small scale, development is difficult. But the i-H2GO is the second revision of an all-water remote controlled car that seems to actually work. The Corgi H2GO is a RC card powered by a fuel cell that gets refilled with hydrogen extracted from water. Like the previous model, the H-Racer, it uses solar-powered electrolysis to do it. Unlike the straight-line-only H-Racer, the H2GO is a real RC car that can actually turn left and right.

In 2008 Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies and Corgi International released the H2GO. And now they’re updating it. As with the previous model, you pour water into the refueling station and it is electrolyzed (split into hydrogen and oxygen) by power from a solar panel. The high energy hydrogen is directed into the car and converted to electricity to run it. On a cloudy day you can also use a USB charging cable to electrolyze the water.
The i-H2GO is controlled by an iOS app (an Android version is apparently on its way) instead of the radio-controller that came with the last model. There are on-screen controls in the app or a “Gyro Mode” that turns the whole phone into the steering wheel. The car, refueling station and charging panel come together for $180, $75 cheaper than the last model, and are scheduled to ship on August 15.
