Sony and Samsung products to get Price Hike upto 20% Across All Categories

“With the weakening of the rupee, the company will raise the prices of its products. This will be done shortly,” Sunil Nayyar, Head Sales, Sony India.
The products that Sony India sells, including flat panel TVs (Bravia), digital cameras (Cyber-Shot), laptops (Vaio) and smartphones (Xperia) , are shipped to India from other countires.
Nayyar said the weakening of the rupee was affecting the company and the prices have to be raised. ”The rise will be a mild one and not be a burden on the consumers. The company will absorb the most impact,” he said.
As Diwali and other festivals festivals are round the corner, the company plans to earn a revenue of Rs 400 crore during the period of August to November, 30 percent higher than the last year’s figure as last year at the same time, the revenue earned was Rs 310 crore, he said.
Nationally, the company is eyeing a growth of 25 percent. It will also increase the distribution network from 850 to 935 across the country, Nayyar added.
Sources close to iGyaan have also confirmed that Samsung is also contemplating a price hike of 15-20% on all its products, that can majorly affect the prices of the upcoming products like Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Gear and the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014.
Depreciating Rupee and the deteriorating economy has caused a major stall in the purchase power of the consumer, with prices shooting sky-high, companies are ready to look at major decline in sales across the board (even though most. Companies in all retail segments from cars to mobiles all products have been increasing prices and it should have a negative impact on the commercial growth of India. Hopefully we can recover from this in time.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Announced With Improved S-Pen

179066-galaxynote3family

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, a device that promises to be demonstrably faster than its predecessor while keeping the tradition of being thinner, lighter and more compact than the Note II.
The 5.7-inch device has been upgraded to 1920×1080 pixels, and at 168 grams and 8.3mm thick, it’s actually thinner and lighter than the Note II. It comes with a soft-touch, textured backing in three colours, black, white and pink.
The backside of the Galaxy Note 3 features a 13-megapixel camera which is capable of 4K video recording and a faux leather cover. Sandwiched in-between those parts is a 2.3Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with 3GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB storage expandable up to 64GB and a 3,200mAh battery. As expected, it runs on Android 4.3 with TouchWIZ.
“We introduced the original Galaxy Note in 2011 and launched a whole new smart device category. The undeniable success of the Galaxy Note strengthened our conviction that consumers want higher quality features for smart devices and they want those new features to make their lives better,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a powerful, original approach that enables users to tell the stories of their lives through dynamic and seamless expressions of their passions across work, play and life experiences. With a simple click of the S Pen button, users can unlock opportunities for self-expression, features that transform everyday activities into extraordinary events and access to new experiences delivered to them on Note 3’s larger screen”.
The Note 3 also comes with a few interesting software features, including Air Command, an on-screen portal to four specific features:
  • Action Memo - Quick handwritten notes that can be converted into actions. For example, you can write out someone’s name, phone number and address and the software will automatically parse the data and add him or her to your address book.
  • Scrapbook - Basically a mobile Evernote Web Clipper, this allows you to grab pieces of web page — text or photo — and save it in various notebooks
  • Screen Write – Full screen memos with annotations
  • S Finder – Finds content online or in the phone just by entering keywords
  • Pen Window - Arguably the most interesting piece of the puzzle, it allows users to open a separate app in a window size of your choosing, overlaid on top of another app. For example, if you’re chatting about expenses with your wife or husband in the SMS app, you can overlay a calculator on top and perform the addition without leaving the app.
There’s also a new and improved Multi Window feature, which now allows for data sharing and interaction between apps.
Samsung has also done plenty of work to the S-Pen. The stylus is now more a part of the Galaxy Note 3 than ever before.
‘The S-Pen is now the key that unlocks all the power, functionality and features of the Galaxy Note 3.’ Samsung detailed the following new attributes of its S-Pen at launch:
  • Action Memo allows users to handwrite a note and automatically execute a function or convert that handwritten information into formatted content. Action Memo can instantly initiate a call, add to contacts, look up an address on a map, search the web, save a task to a to-do list, and more
  • Air Command – hold the S-Pen on the Galaxy Note 3’s display and it brings up five Quick Commands in a circular menu. The idea here is to allow for quick note taking from anywhere in the Galaxy Note 3’s UX.
  • Scrapbook enables users to organise or track down content and information from various sources including the web, YouTube and Gallery in one place so that users can easily look back at collected content all at once. When consumers save content for future use, Scrapbook also collects source material or URLs allowing them to easily refer back to the original source
  • The Screen Write feature captures the full screen image of the current page on the device and allows users to write comments or additional information onto the captured image
  • S Finder allows users to expansively search for content on their device regardless of the type. By putting in keywords or filters such as date, location and content type, users can search related documents, events, communication threads, and even the Help page – all in one place. In addition, users can also search for hand-written content in their Notes and memo applications, as well as symbols and formulas
  • Pen Window allows users to use the S Pen not only for drawing sketches or writing notes, but now also for opening a small application window for a true multitasking experience. Simply by drawing a window of any size, anywhere on the screen, users can easily and quickly open another application window such as YouTube, calculator or Browser without pausing current activity on the screen
The new Galaxy Note 3 is slated to begin rolling out to consumers on Sept. 25, and Samsung says that it’ll eventually hit 140 countries around the globe. This new Note is expected to be available worldwide in October. Stay tuned for pricing information!

Sony's new HMZ-T3 wearable display gets 'wireless' option, easy smartphone connectivity and HD audio (hands-on)

Sony's new HMZT3 headmounted display gets 'wireless' option, improved display and audio handson
Ahead of Sony's own IFA press event, it's already announced its latest head-mounted display. The HMZ-T3 is the third iteration and while there's nosubstitutional reality function (or camera), the company's made some important improvements that could tip the balance for anyone concerned with sinking a substantial amount of cash for a one-person display. It'll come in a new "wireless" iteration -- we'll explain why we used those quote marks a little later -- while Sony has also improved the clarity of its dual OLED displays through lens and software adjustments (although the 720p resolution stays the same). There's now a bigger viewing sweet spot and several new specialized screen options for gaming and movie-watching. Our favorite new feature, however, is the ability to plug in Android (presumably Xperia) devices with micro-HDMI / MHL connectivity. The device, via the battery pack, has ports for both full-size and micro-HMDI cables, and given the current influx of HD-capable smartphones (and content), it's a pretty pervasive way to use it.
The HMZ-T3 also arrives with high-definition audio, virtualized 7.1 channel sound and has shed 10 grams since the T2. That's despite improved padding and some more forgiving adjustment controls that made wearing the device noticeably less frustrating. Both wireless and wired options are set to go on sale in Japan this October and while a global roll-out isn't yet confirmed, Sony's told us that it's certainly "in discussions" about further availability. We managed to get some early access to the wearable ahead of its reveal in Germany, so naturally, we played some games and watched some video. Our initial impressions and more details are right after the break.
Sony's new HMZT3 headmounted display gets 'wireless' option, improved display and audio handson
The gaming experience was pretty similar to what we saw on last year's model, although there's some new viewing menu options to increase the visibility of darker areas in-game without washing out the brighter parts. There's also the ability to reduce the 'size' of the screen you're viewing, down to 70 percent, if you're finding the HMZ-T3 a little too immersive. Sony has also thrown in a new 'screen' mode for 2D content which offers a curved, movie theater-esque wraparound view. Video content was noticeably clearer and sharper than on its predecessors -- colors were richer and the view didn't have the same haze or blur we experienced on the T2 model. The separate processing unit (needed for the wireless function and linking to your PlayStation 3 or Blu-ray player), has been improved too, with the sensible inclusion of multiple HDMI input ports.
Sound-wise, Sony has added a new 32-bit DAC, and both sets arrive with some of the company's better in-ear buds -- MDR-XB90 headphones for the HMZ-T3W and MDR-EX300s buds for the wired HMZ-T3. These connect just below and to the left of the the eye-piece, which has been redesigned following feedback from last year's model, with the display now now easier to focus on. There's still a slider beneath each lens to adjust.
Further feedback has also resulted in Sony adjusting the headbands and rebalancing the weighting of the headset. The upper band is made of flexible plastic and you can adjust the length from either side. The front headrest has been further expanded, is now taller and can be folded away within the headset for storage -- these changes were made to keep the HMZ-T3 securely on your head and increase the comfort during extended sessions, although we feel it's still a little too heavy. There's also a certain knack to getting it to fit on your head just right -- once we had adjusted the headbands and placement, though, it felt pretty comfortable with or without glasses.
Now about that wireless model. While the headset's new Wireless HD mode can stream content to the unit without any picture quality degradation up to seven meters away, the battery unit (which receives the signal) is still tethered to the headset. At least Sony has managed to slim the cable down since the last model and the aforementioned battery-pack (rated for up to 3 hours of use) is small enough to slip in a shirt or trouser pocket -- it takes up around the same space as two smartphones, stacked.

Yahoo Shuts Down Web Portal In China

Yahoo

Yahoo China, which is operated by Chinese e-commerce and Internet services behemoth Alibaba Group, has closed its Web portal. The site now displays a good-bye message before redirecting visitors to now.taobao.com, a news site run by Alibaba Group’s Taobao.
The good-bye message says the decision to shutdown Yahoo China’s portal is in accordance with a 2012 agreement made between Alibaba Group and Yahoo and that Yahoo China’s employees will move on to new positions within Alibaba.
The closing of Yahoo China’s portal is one of the last steps in Alibaba Group’s decision to gradually take down the Yahoo-branded services it operates and comes two weeks after Yahoo’s email service in China shutdown, with users asked to transfer their accounts to Alibaba’s Alimail. In January, Yahoo China ceased its Chinese music service, citing an adjustment to its product strategy.
Yahoo paid $1 billion for a 40% stake in Alibaba in 2005, before the company grew into the backbone of China’s rapidly expanding e-commerce market. In September, Alibaba closed an initial repurchase of its shares from Yahoo for $7.6 billion. As part of the deal, Yahoo agreed that Alibaba Group can continue to operate Yahoo China’s brand for up to four years. Alibaba Group’s decision to gradually cease operating its Yahoo-branded properties is a reminder of the struggles that major U.S. Internet companies–including Google, eBay and Amazon–have faced in China due to confluence of factors including government censorship, failure to localize effectively and the rapid rise of Chinese companies like Baidu and Tencent.
Yahoo’s remaining 24% stake in the Chinese company, which is expected to go public within the next two years, is estimated to be worth about $14 billion.

Sony Smartphone-Mount "Lens Cameras" Leak

We’ve previously covered the recent rumours of the 20 Megapixel Sony Wifi ‘smart lens’ which will attach to Android and iOS smartphones and connect to the phone via Wifi. Theoretically, you’ll be able to take much better pictures with the bigger CMOS sensor and Zeiss glass.

A new rumored gold iPhone now has a rumored gold lens attachment from Sony, according to a report from SonyAlphaRumors which has also posted an image. Until now we’d only seen leaks of a black device, and while a white version was perhaps to be expected, how about gold? Would be a perfect match for that rumored gold iPhone 5S.

“For the first time you can shoot top quality images with your smartphone. Forget these iPhone or Android lens kits!” said SonyAlphaRumors.com, which posted images of the new devices.

But the lenses won’t have screens or camera controls, and can be attached magnetically to the smartphone, from which they can be controlled, it added.

The two new ‘lens-camera’ devices will launch as the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100, the idea being that they mount onto a smartphone and contain a built-in imaging sensor, Bionz processor, Wi-Fi/NFC, SD card slot and battery.

The QX10 is rumoured to have a 1/2.3 inch 18MP CMOS sensor and f/3.3-5.9 lens. In terms of pricing, the more expensive QX100 is expected to be priced around the $450 mark. The lenses will be able to capture HD video at 1080/30p.

Does this interest you shutterbugs?

Transparent gel speaker plays music through the magic of ionic conduction (video)

It may be hard to believe, but that transparent disk in the photo above is actually a fully functioning speaker. A team of researchers at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have pioneered a never before seen application of ionic conductivity by creating a see-through artificial muscle that can produce sounds spanning the entire audible spectrum. While ionic conduction isn't a novel idea, it's been considered impractical due to the fact that ionic materials react poorly to high voltage. The team, which included postdoctoral research fellows Jeong-Yun Sun and Christoph Keplinger (pictured above), circumvented that obstacle by placing a layer of rubber between two sheets of transparent conductive gel, allowing the system to work with both high voltage and high actuation, two qualities necessary for sound reproduction. Theoretically, soft machine technology such as this can be used to do much more than play Grieg's Peer Gynt, particularly in the fields of robotics, mobile computing and adaptive optics. To watch it in action, check out the video after the break.

Apple Working On Intelligent Brightness Control And Automated FaceTime Camera

Recently Apple Insider spotted two newly published patent applications from Apple, describing a system that could help improve performances for future iPhones and iPads, via selective screen brightness control and auto camera switching during FaceTime video calls.

The first Apple patent application describes a way for a user to selectively adjust brightness and contrast of different user interface elements independently of one another. This is something that some apps already offer.

Essentially, this could work in practice by doing things like selective lightboxing. Foregrounding elements that contain active content and providing enhanced visibility as well as offering some battery savings.

Apple’s invention would have the advantage of making this a system-level feature, and one that works automatically in some cases. This could have big impacts not only in general usability, but for specific accessibility advantage as well.

The 2nd patent application describes a way in which Apple devices might be able to switch automatically between front and rear-facing cameras. This is based on cues from the user and what’s being captured by each camera lens. This would require devices to capture both streams at one time. ButApple says in the patent that advances in mobile processor tech have recently begun to make that possible without too much excess demand on system resources.

In practice, such a system would be able to work with live calls via services like FaceTime, so that when a participant says something like “Look what Bruno’s doing” and the rear-facing camera detects a dog-like shape in frame, it switches automatically to broadcasting that feed to the receiving party.

This could also work for locally-recorded video. The patent application says, “Doing things like switching between front and back cameras depending on if it detects the person doing the filming is talking or not.”

Both of these are the type of next-gen tech projects that likely won’t make it into hardware for the immediately incoming generation of Apple iPhone’s or iPad’s. But they are logical enough additions to existing features that we could well see them in a couple of years’ time.

HTC Fetch : A Tiny Device To Help You Locate Your HTC One

htc-fetch-slide-01

HTC has unveiled a small Bluetooth 4.0 LE-powered accessory, aptly named HTC Fetch, that helps users find their lost phones or prevents them from leaving it behind.
It works via Bluetooth 4.0?s Low Energy protocol, which allows devices to stay paired for months at a time with no battery drain. The HTC Fetch itself can attach to a keychain or be slipped in a bag, and has only one button, which sounds an alarm on your phone if it is within 15 metres. It has a six month battery life, with a small user-replaceable battery compartment.
The whole thing sounds like a less network-connected Tile, which we wrote about earlier this year and has since raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. Fetch does have the advantage of pairing with your HTC phone via NFC, so no fumbling in the Bluetooth settings, but is otherwise a strange product that may not gain much traction.
HTC Fetch also sounds an alarm if you leave an area that your phone is located, and if the device does get lost or stolen, HTC Fetch updates the phone’s last location, which can be pinpointed through HTC’s website.
The keychain accessory is expected to retail for around $35, though no word on whether it is coming to India.

Nokia reveals Here Auto connected car navigation system

Nokia's no newbie to navigation, but its latest product raises its involvement to the next level. The Here Auto connected car platform is comprised of an application that can be embedded to a vehicle's navigation system, a mobile app companion and a cloud service. Any in-car navigator with the Here Auto software can offer voice-guided navigation with or without a data connection, along with 2D, 3D and street-level satellite maps. You'll need internet access to tap into the cloud service for real-time data, including traffic and weather updates, but previously downloaded maps work just fine even when you're offline.

The Auto Companion mobile app complements the software and the cloud service, giving you a way to pre-plan trips or find your car through a phone. Currently, it only works on Windows Phone devices, but Espoo's developing ones for iOS and Android. Nokia has partnered with Continental (the same parts supplier workingwith Google and IBM) to find carmakers willing to integrate Here Auto into their navigation systems. It might take a while before we see the system hit the market, but it'll be demonstrated at the International Motor Show in Germany on September 10th.

Samsung Galaxy Gear Control App Confirms NFC And Other Features

Samsung has already confirmed that its Galaxy Gear smartwatch would launch on September 4th, but that does not stop more details from leaking out. As the launch date comes near, we all now have a good idea of how the Galaxy Gear would look like, but this recent leak shows the mobile app for Smart Watch and gives us a better picture of how would the device work.

Saints Row 4 Hits One Million Sales In First Week

Publisher Deep Silver has revealed that Saints Row 4 shifted more than one million units in its opening week. Despite the closing of former publisher THQ last year, a less than desirable late-development period seems not to have affected the quality of the game.

Saints Row 4 builds upon the silliness of past entries with the inclusion of superpowers, aliens, and the luxuries that come with being the President of the United States. The Presidential Pack and the Grassroots Pack, were also released on PSN this week. The former lets players run around as notable presidents such as Barack Obama or Abraham Lincoln, while the latter provides an assortment of items, including a gun that fires toilet plungers.
